A MODERN VERSION OF RICHARD III SET IN THE MOST TREACHEROUS OF PLACES — HIGH SCHOOL

Teenage Dick

by Mike Lew | Directed by Moritz Von Stuelpnagel
December 3 - 22, 2021
The Huntington Calderwood/BCA, 527 Tremont St.

As the winter formal gives way to a glorious spring fling at Roseland High School, we enter the world of Mike Lew’s darkly funny, modern-day spin on Richard III. Tony Award nominee Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Hand to God on Broadway) directs this ruthless and hilarious new play about a young man who, after years of torment by his classmates for his cerebral palsy, decides to campaign for student body president. But is it better to be loved or feared? And how far will he go to realize his ambition? The New York Times cheers “moving, exciting, and profoundly eye-opening.”

  • ‘Teenage Dick’ is a model for disability representation on stage and on screen

Actor Gregg Mozgala said he can count on one hand the number of times a disabled actor has played Richard III, who he calls “arguably the most famous disabled character in Western literature.” Mozgala is adding his name to that small but growing list. He’s the star of “Teenage Dick,” a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Richard III,” which runs at the Huntington Theatre Company’s Calderwood Pavilion through Jan. 2.

  • Now is the winter of discontent for the darkly comic 'Teenage Dick' at the Huntington

Rows of red and blue lockers complement the painted white, red and blue bricks of Roseland High School. Trophies and sports regalia like basketballs, soccer balls, pom-poms and lacrosse nets are crowded together in a glass display showcasing the Roseland Stallions' triumphs in the hallway. This high school is the setting for Mike Lew's "Teenage Dick" at the Huntington Theatre Company’s Wimberly Pavilion stage in the South End through Jan. 2.

  • “An Astonishing New Version Of Richard III Set In A Modern High School”

[...] This show isn’t really a “Richard III High School Edition” but many aspects of the tale, along with innumerous Shakespeare quotes, are brilliantly acted out over the course of a "to the winner goes the spoils" (apologies to Mark Twain) one hour 45 minutes (with no intermission). The "disabled characters," as presented in “Teenage Dick,” are not like those mostly seen represented in popular culture.

  • ‘Teenage Dick’ aims to upend clichés about characters with disabilities by sending Richard III to high school

Narratives about disabled characters in popular culture, says actor Gregg Mozgala, tend to fall into a narrow slice of tropes — stories of inspiration, stories of overcoming adversity, and stories of dying with dignity. “Where you do see disability represented, either the disabled person literally has no voice, or they’re embodied by an actor who is non-disabled,” says Mozgala, who has cerebral palsy. “So I think theater can be a vehicle to really counter those narratives and investigate them in a live, flesh-and-blood way.”

  • ‘Teenage Dick’ brings disabled experience to ‘Richard III’

After graduating from Boston University with a BFA in theater, Gregg Mozgala struggled to find roles. Mozgala, who has cerebral palsy, discovered he would typically get called in to audition for characters with disabilities, any disability, and not much else. “It wasn’t necessarily specific to my disability,” Mozgala said. “I would get called for people with down syndrome or autism, something very far from my own experience. … It showed me that people in positions of power had little to no understanding of disability.”
