A devious new comedy about one woman’s deal with the devil

Witch

by Jen Silverman | Directed by Rebecca Bradshaw
October 15 - November 14, 2021
The Huntington Calderwood/BCA, 527 Tremont St.

This fiendishly funny new play follows an alluring devil named Scratch as he arrives in the country village of Edmonton, and he promises to make the darkest dreams of its locals come true in exchange for their souls. When he meets Elizabeth Sawyer, she should be the easiest to convince — she’s an outcast, branded as a witch for years. So why does she resist Scratch’s deal? This subversive, inventive work by Jen Silverman (The Roommate) is a free adaptation of a 1621 Jacobean comedy recreated with a modern sensibility, and is “devilishly clever and deliciously laugh-packed” (StageSceneLA). Directing is Rebecca Bradshaw.

Approximate run time: Witch plays in approximately 100 minutes with no intermission.

  • Huntington's 'Witch' asks how we're shaped by our desires

Faced with the opportunity to gain power, status and money, peasant Frank Thorney won't let anything get in his way as he ascends, not even his love for his secret wife, Winnifred, in Huntington Theater's "Witch." Somehow, "It [love] matters less than it should," he says. The entertaining Jen Silverman narrative (running now through Nov. 14) is an adaptation of "The Witch of Edmonton" and focuses on the complicated relationship between Elizabeth Sawyer (Lyndsay Allyn Cox), the neighborhood outcast, and Scratch (Michael Underhill), a leather-clad devil.

  • A WICKEDLY FUNNY DARK COMEDY!

Just in time for Halloween, Jen Silverman’s new play takes place in the 17th century but feels as contemporary as ever, reckoning with themes of gender and bias in society. Silverman has loosely adapted the Jacobean play “The Witch of Edmonton” from 1621 to tell the story of Elizabeth Sawyer, an outcast who is accused of being a witch as an intriguing devil named Scratch comes to town and shakes things up.

We’ve become quite familiar with the sentiment: You have to laugh because otherwise you’d be crying. Between the last presidency and the current pandemic we are all at our wit’s end. Ironically wit is what has been keeping many of us alive. Playwright Jen Silverman’s Witch is a masterful work taking the audience on a familiar but unexpected (for the most part) journey.

Anearby Salem has taught us, it’s rarely a good time when the devil comes to town. But in Witch, playing at the Huntington Theatre through Nov. 15, the narrative gets a modern makeover rounded out with laughter, tears and questions probing into contemporary morality.

  • There’s no witch in ‘Witch,’ just a bedeviled woman

You won’t find any broomsticks, boiling cauldrons, or burning stakes in Jen Silverman’s “Witch.” The Huntington Theatre Company production, beginning performances at the Calderwood Pavilion this weekend, isn’t about the Salem witch trials or the area’s centuries-long fascination with the occult, cautions director Rebecca Bradshaw. “[It’s] about a strong, independent woman asking for more from the society around her, and she gets ostracized for that.”

The English theater scene of Shakespeare and his contemporaries spent a lot of time reinforcing what it meant to be a witch. The nasty women spent a lot of time over bubbling cauldrons filled with newts’ eyes and dogs’ tongues and cursing men into impotence.
